
Franz Kamlander was born mute. He would never learn to read and write. He communicated only through gestures and was considered by his surrounding as “mentally retarded”. He first did small farming jobs, but at thirty-seven, he was arrested for sexual assault and committed to a psychiatric hospital. He was terrified by the church and everything related to it. Prior to joining Gugging he drew. His work was inspired by animals ; he liked especially cows which he painted in all colors. He signed his drawings with three wavy lines.
